NEVER NEVER - BARRINGTON WEEKEND 14-15TH NOVEMBER 2009
Christine Borrows, Monday, 16 November 2009A successful fun weekend. We arrived Saturday afternoon at the field behind the Never Never Lodge and set up camp. Once most people had arrived boats were loaded onto cars and we drove up to Bindara, and negotiating the kamakazi dogs made our way down to the river for the put in. A team of 11 set off for the approx. one hour paddle back to camp.
The day was hot and the water cool - brilliant combination. The river level was ideal.
Once back at camp with tents erected we had a communal dinner - involving a HUGE side of rump - on Peter's weber Q, baked potatoes and salad. Not all went to plan. Last year apparently Colin was in charge of cooking and burnt the meat to a crisp. This time we had to eat in relays carving off the edges as the meat in the middle was still abit under done. But to keep things interesting we had Ella and Ali in charge of damper making - which went down well with Liz's jam. By the time the adults got to eating it was rather late and a few glasses of wine had been consumed. Perhaps that was why Chris T managed to have his beef with jam instead of chutney?
Sunday morning and first the slalom course gates were erected. Then another river trip down from Bindara back to camp this time with a few less experienced paddlers - first time on moving water for David and Peter. They had a few swims but arrived back at camp still smiling so it was all good. After lunch back at camp we ran our slalom. Joey set the first course and Mark the second. The race went well with good performances from some newer kayakers and Angus having a go in C1 too.
After the race with the course dismantled and the cars all packed - we all jumped in the river to cool down before the ride home.
Hope everyone had fun - I did. See you all next time.
Christine.
